What to Expect During A Toronto In-Home Newborn Photography Session

Family newborn session at home in Toronto with pet dog

Planning a Toronto newborn photography session  can feel exciting and a little nerve-wracking. Many parents wonder what will actually happen during the session, especially if this is their first time being photographed with a newborn. Knowing what to expect during a Toronto in-home newborn session can help you relax and enjoy capturing these precious first days. In this post, I’ll walk you through a typical newborn session, step by step, so you feel confident and prepared.

Understanding what to expect during a Toronto in-home newborn session will make the experience even more enjoyable.

Arrival and Setting Up Your Space

When I arrive for your in-home newborn session, the first step is to assess the natural light in your home and choose the best spots for photos. I usually focus on the nursery, main bedroom, and living area, depending on lighting and your home’s layout. I always bring a supplemental light in case we are dealing with a dark day or you would like photos in a space that doesn’t get amazing light (some nurseries in Toronto homes can be quite dark!).  If siblings are joining in, I will often get them to help give me a house tour so we can get to know each other before the session begins. While I set up, you can settle in with your baby and get comfortable. This is also a good time to ask any last-minute questions about the session flow.

If you’re wondering how to prepare your home and family before I arrive, I’ve shared simple tips in this post about preparing for your newborn session.

Capturing Baby’s Early Days During Your Toronto In-Home Newborn Session

During your Toronto in-home newborn session, everything revolves around your baby. I follow their lead. If they need to eat, we pause. If they need a cuddle, we cuddle. If they’re wide awake, we capture those bright-eyed moments.

My approach is lifestyle-based, which means minimal posing and lots of natural connection. I focus on the little details you’ll want to remember — tiny fingers wrapped around yours, sleepy stretches, soft snuggles on your bed or couch. These are the moments that tell your real story.

Including Parents and Siblings

Your family is a huge part of the session. I’ll gently guide parents into relaxed, natural poses and moments of connection, while encouraging siblings to interact with the baby in their own way. Older siblings might need a snack break or a little reset, and that’s completely fine. We keep things flexible and stress-free so everyone feels comfortable. Pets are always welcome too, because they’re part of your story.

When it comes to siblings and pets, my best advice is to keep your expectations low and just enjoy the moment, even if full cooperation isn’t happening. I’m a parent of two and have photographed many families with young children, and I can tell you that when the pressure is on, kids tend to resist. When we keep the vibe relaxed and fun, that’s when the magic happens.

I come to every session with plenty of playful prompts for little ones, and I’m always ready to pivot if someone isn’t feeling it. Some of the sweetest moments happen in between the “planned” shots anyway.

Breaks and Feeding

Newborn sessions are never rushed. I don’t have a set time for shooting  We take breaks whenever needed for feeding, changing, or simply taking a breather. There’s no strict timeline we have to follow. Some sessions are calm and sleepy, others are a little more lively. Both are perfect in their own way.  Most sessions will last anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours.

The more relaxed everyone feels, the better the photos will be. Truly.

 A Natural, Relaxed Flow

My approach is lifestyle-focused baby-led and unobtrusive. I capture (carefully curated) candid moments as your family interacts naturally, letting connections and emotions shine through. While I do guide some poses, the overall feel is relaxed, gentle, and organic; your baby and family are the stars.  I don’t have a set structure in terms of the order of the photos I take.  Session flow depends on your family’s needs, whether baby is asleep or awake, happy or fussy and whether siblings are involved.  The beauty of at-home newborn sessions is, no two sessions are alike.  The photos you receive will tell the unique story of your family.  I will ensure we get a great selection of images, that captures this special chapter in your life.

Wrapping up your session – What to expect next

As the session ends, we review the areas we’ve photographed and ensure all desired shots are captured. Afterward, I carefully edit and deliver the images, highlighting the unique story of your family’s first days together. Every Toronto in-home newborn session is slightly different because each home and family dynamic is unique, which makes these images truly special. I’ll carefully go through and edit your images, selecting the best moments from our time together. You’ll receive a gallery filled with natural, heartfelt images that reflect this season of your life exactly as it is.
